Nanna Särkkä

Nanna Särkkä, M.Soc.Sci (Communication), graphic designer.

Nanna Särkkä has worked for ten years in magazine journalism, as a graphic designer, sub-editor and journalist. As a graphic designer it has bothered her that there is so much silent knowledge in editorial design (i.e. layout of magazines): many big issues are not explicitly outspoken. This hinders for example planning and evaluation of the editorial design and the journalistic product as a whole. On the other hand, she feels that there is a big gap in understanding between the graphic designers and readers. Designers don’t know very well how the object of their work is interpreted by the readers. That is the topic of her own doctoral study: editorial design and the ways it is conceptualized in production and in reception.

The past few years Nanna has worked as a project researcher in Tekes Next Media research program and studied the ways of visualizing stock market data on digital platforms, application of media brands’ visual identities in cross platform publishing and photographic work processes. Before that she was involved in starting up the database of Finnish magazine journalism research and a carried a study about the genres and ways of classifying magazines.

She is an associate junior researcher in VITRO, the Doctoral School of Communication Studies, and a member of Media Concepts Research Group.
